NTS are behavioural skills which determine how an individual undertakes an activity. NTS allow individuals to manage their own work activities and errors more effectively.

NTS are needed to create expert signallers.

Eight key non-technical skills were identified by Network Rail: Conscientiousness, Communication, Willingness and Ability to Learn, Attention Management, Relationships with People, Controlled Under Pressure, Multi-task Capacity, Planning and Decision Making.
