Everyone who needs to go on the railway track as part of their job must be trained on how to keep safe. Track workers and other staff whose main tasks are in the track enviroment must study a two-day course provided by Network Rail’s Sentinel scheme.

However, train crew, drivers and other staff who only occasionally need to go on track are exempt from the scheme. For years each train and freight operator trained their staff independently.

The rail industry recognised that this led to varied standards in the training and was not an efficient way to carry out the training. In 2007 RSSB commissioned Lucid to develop a training package that would specidically address the training needs of the train crew.
